Seaside Half Marathon and 5k

After MC lovingly stayed with me during the ING half marathon together, this gave her a chance to really go out there and see what she could do. We made a weekend of it with some friends and had a pretty good time (though I'm not sure how much my "carbo loading" the day before helped, haha). MC, Julia, Mac, and Barb were all running the half marathon and Brian and I opted for the 5k.  Both were simple out-and-back routes, and the course was about as flat as you can get. MC's goal was to break 2:10 in the half and I just wanted to not die or puke during the 5k. :-) Last time I tried to run, my ankle injuries flared up so I was actually hoping to just make it through without that giving me too much trouble. The weather was pretty cool (mostly because it was windy) and overcast, but about perfect, in my opinion, for running since I very quickly generate a lot of heat. Given my goal and how little exercise I have been doing, I was actually pretty happy with how I finished and was SUPER proud of MC for obliterating her goal!! We were originally planning on hanging out at the race grounds for the day, but it was pretty chilly with the wind and overcastedness so we didn't actually last too long. All-in-all it was a pretty fun race and we had a great weekend (despite the dismal weather) and all seemed pretty happy with their race results. 5K 32:36 Brian - 32:37 Half-Marathon MC - 2:04:52 Julia - 2:04:52 Mac - 1:56:59 Barb - 2:17:45

Up and At'm Turkey Trot 5k

The whole family did this one! It was low 40s with a light breeze, and I'm pretty sure it was the exact same course as last year. Plenty of rolling hills, but no huge ones that really destroyed us. Being sick the past two weeks, my training regimen was negligible, but I just did my best to keep up with Lauren and Mom (even if it almost killed me!). We found out later that mom actually won her age group! Woohoo! It took us about 30 seconds to reach the start line, so I adjusted all the times accordingly. 30:57 Mom - 30:41 Lauren - 30:46 Dad - 37:36

11th Annual Alan C Sundberg, Jr. Memorial 5k Run

A beautiful morning for a run at Maclay Gardens. Everything felt pretty good and I actually had enough in me for a strong finish. I DID hold back a little during the race (but also felt a little rough), but was pretty happy with my time. Kinda nice to get back into running again. Oh, AND there were free melanoma screenings so I got checked out! This was also my first race running completely by my lonesome, which was a little odd. I like my running buddies! :-) 31:03

Rhythm and Roots 5k

It was nice to head up to Bristol for a race. The weather is a lot more conducive to running than down in Tallahassee! MC and I were both nursing injuries so we weren't shooting for anything fancy. We were both just happy to be able to run at all! Similar course to a lot of Bristol 5ks, but with smells of festival food luring you to the finish. :-) 31:46 Mom - 31:45 MC - 32:58

RC Cola and Moon Pie 10 Miler

I hadn't been training a lot and we planned to do a lot of walking, so this really wasn't a race for time. Definitely a race to see if I could even finish! This was by far the longest race I've done other than the one half marathon I did with mom. The course was rolling hills through pasture with one big hill at the end of mile 4. The heat was ridiculous and we got completely baked the whole time. It was pretty rough. MC is in training with a couple friends and had a training run scheduled for that day so we started off keeping her schedule. So for the first 6 miles we alternated running for 4 minutes and walking for 1. The heat made it kinda brutal, but I was surprised how well my body held up and was stoked that my calf didn't bother me. After we completed her 6 miler, we walked mile 7, then mostly walked with some mixed in jogging for the rest of it. MC developed a harsh side stitch and my calf was hurting (but in a different place) and it was only getting hotter so we just did our best to not finish completely last :-) Our time wasn't stellar, but I want to see what our 5 mile split looked like and I'm honestly just glad to have finished without injury. Maybe I should be better about the whole "training" thing. ;-) MC and I had the same times: 5 mile split - 57:11 total time - 2:13:18

Tails and Trails 5K

Did this race last year with mom, but they modified the course a little this year and I think it was closer to being an actual 5k. Started out with more road running before we hit the trail (which was good because there were a lot more people) but a lot of the trail portion was similar to what I remembered. Dad had been training too so Mom and Dad both came down and ran. We pretty much just stayed together for a little over 2 miles then MC and I went ahead a little then I made my self charge up the horrid, mean, 0.1 mile hill to the finish. Overall a really pretty run and fun to have the parents join. Especially since it was Dad's first 5k race ever! 33:45 MC - 33:49 Mom - 34:21 Dad - 34:50

Springtime 10k

We actually joined a training group for this one that met once a week. It was still not a ton of training, but better than we would have done on our own! Overall it was a pretty hilly course. No really bad hills, but rolling hills almost the entire time. Luckily we had seen most of the course in training. Matt couldn't join us because of his back issues, but we still got to run with Lynn for the entirety. Unfortunately MC and I both got sick the weeks prior so that probably slowed us own a little bit, but we were still pretty happy with our time. Probably don't have much interest in running many more 10ks, but we will definitely be logging more 5ks soon!! 1:07:40 MC - 1:07:37 Lynn - 1:07:39

Race to Live 5k

MC and I decided to run a 5k, even though our training regimen has been a little sub-par for running lately. It was a cool morning, but the race wasn't until 10 am so it was actually about a perfect 50 degrees when we ran. Some decent hills as we looped through campus, and we stayed running for the entire race, minus a quick stop at a water stand. Lynn and Matt came out too and Matt ran with us and Lynn ran with some of her work buddies. My calf started bugging me about half way through but never really hurt too bad. And though not by a ton, MC got a PR, which is always awesome :-) 31:16 MC - 31:16 (PR)

Team Gey 5k

It was kinda chilly and MC and I had been kinda sick, not trained, and enjoyed ourselves the night before so we took it pretty easy. It was for a good cause and was fun and we actually walked most of the time, but I figured I would throw it on here anyhoo. Hopefully we'll be a little more prepared next year :-) ~45:00 MC - ~45:00

Turkey Trot 5k

A brisk (low 30s) 5k in Johnson City. It was pretty jam packed with people and we accidentally started a little far back in the pack so our actual time is probably 30-45 seconds faster than chip time. Lauren decided to take it easy and run with mom and me so it was a fun time to run all together. Hadn't really been running much lately, but I was happy with how my legs felt. Mostly got slowed down by a lot of nasal drainage due to a stuffy nose and the cold weather. 30:55 Mom - 30:55 Lauren - 30:55

I Run For The Party - Halloween 5k

Nice and cool evening race in Nashville. It was MC's first race, and she picked a good one! Almost everyone was in costume so it livened things up a bit and made for some more interesting scenery. I stayed with MC the whole race and mom and lauren ran ahead a little bit. We definitely were out to "run for the party" and weren't going for a snazzy time. MC did awesome for her first race and we all had a lot of fun! I'm going to go ahead and log our chip time, even though we could probably subtract 20 seconds since it took about that long to actually cross the start line because of the crowd. 35:08 MC - 35:07 Mom - 33:20 Lauren - 32:26

Eastman Road Race - 3k

While I was home for Matt's Bachelor Party, mom and I decided it would be fun to try to throw in a race. Matt and his friend Dan actually joined us as well, which was fun. Considering I had a bit of a rough night the night before and haven't been running, I was actually pretty pleased with how well we did. Hopefully we can coordinate some more races soon!! 17:49 Mom - 17:48

Muddy Buddy

Cool race that Michelle heard about and thought I would be interested in. We were gonna do the one in Orlando, but it sold out so we did the one in Atlanta. Not sure exactly how long the Atlanta course was, but it was 6-7 miles with 4 obstacles and a mud pit at the end. I started biking so I did 3 legs of biking and two of running while Keith did 3 running and 2 biking. It was a pretty hilly course, and it was rainy so it was a little slicker than normal, but it was a lot of fun. Definitely need to train a little harder if I'm going to do it again though, haha. Obstacles were a balance beam, over-under, 6 foot climbing wall, 15 foot rope mesh with slide, then of course the mud pit at the end. Finished 16th out of 50 teams so overall we were pretty happy with our results. Keith only had to wait for me a little at the very end so I was pretty stoked about that. Definitely would like to look into doing it again some time. 42:20.8

Tails and Trails 5k+

Mom was in town so we got to actually run a race together. Haven't been able to run many together so it was nice to get to do one. This was mostly a trail run, which was pretty cool. Got stuck behind some people a couple times, but it probably helped us pace better. Weather was pretty nice too. The last section of the race was a brutal uphill, but I heard that the + made it around 3.5 miles so considering, our time was actually pretty good. 32:22 Mom - 32:35

Jingle Bell Run

Yep, that's right. Two races in one day! I know I'm crazy, but oh well. Bopper and Matt and Turtle ran it too and Lindsey was thinking about it so there were going to be some non-runners that I figured I would just chill with and take it easy given my morning. Well I pretty much lost all three of them right off the bat because it was so frickin' crowded. So once I could, I picked up the pace a little to try to at least catch Bopper, but I apparently missed her at some point. Ended up actually setting a PR! That's two in one day! hahaha. I didn't get everyone else's times so I'll just post mine for this one. I actually coulda dropped probably another 30 seconds since I got bogged down at the beginning. Maybe I'll try to be more in the front next year. ;-) 16:17 (PR)

Gulf Winds Track Club 5 mile race and 10 mile challenge

Beautiful morning for a run. Weather was just about perfect. I did the 5 mile (8 kilometer) race. The course was definitively rolling hills. I don't think there was a single flat section in the entire race. It was an out and back route and overheard that the back was more uphill than the out. AWESOME! Definitely a challenging course and I went out a little harder than I meant to, but I set a PR so I was pretty stoked! 45:55 (PR)

The Spooky Sprint 5k

Started at the YWCA and it was a nice rolling hill route through Bristol. None of the hills were bad so we kept a pretty decent pace. I've only been running once a week, but have been keeping a decent pace so I was interested to see how the third mile would go. It was mid-50s when we started so the weather was just about perfect. It was fun to have another race with mom. They are few and far between now that I'm in Tally. Also cool to set a PR though there is a little doubt that the course was the right length. I'm sticking with it :-) 27:39 (PR) Mom - 27:39 (PR)

Habitat for Humanity 5k (Tallahassee)

This one actually counted as a community service for wakeboard club since we had 10 people running in it. Weather was not too hot, but pretty humid. Staying up drinking til 5 is not the best way to prepare for a 9am race though. One day I'll learn. 31:45 Turtle - 25:30

Rhythm and Roots 5k

Pretty sure this was the same route as last year. A little cool which was a very welcome change from Tallahassee weather. Probably could've benefit from some carbo loading that didn't entirely consist of beer. ;-) Mom did the walk with our friends from AZ so she didn't get to run, but hopefully will next time. 29:47 Lauren - 24:35 Turtle - 25:11

Crazy 8's 8k

Race at 10pm in Kingsport. Fairly cool (at least compared to Tallahasse). Not too bad of a course, same as last year. After not sleeping thursday night and boarding about 5 times in the days prior my quads were ridiculously sore and I had low hopes, but really surprised myself and ended up with a PR! Can't argue with that. 51:47 (PR) Mom - 51:46 Lauren - 40:43 Turtle - 43:25

Cinco De Mayo 5k

Brutal course. It was all through downtown Nashville. Hot and very very humid. Long rolling hills the entire course. I think they violated some laws of physics to make us go uphill a lot more than we went down. Even the finish we had a huge long uphill, then a turnaround and the last like .03 miles were downhill. Dad said there were people in the top 10-15 that were walking on the last hill. That's how much it sucked. Our preparation for the race didn't really help either since we flew in from Hawai'i and got to Nashville that morning. All-in-all I wasn't too displeased with the time especially considering this was probably close to our hardest 5k to date. 31:19 Mom - 30:50

Run for the Cookies 5k

Started at Tallahassee Community College and basically ran around some of the roads behind it. Very slight rolling hills but overall pretty flat. It was fun having some other folks involved. A little brisk, probably high 40s, which was a little cold for my throat but perfect for my body. All in all kept a lot better pace than I expected considering my first run since before christmas was this past monday and DDR on tuesday was my only other exercise. 29:14 Keith - 23:36 Arturo - 25:23 Christine - 38:46

Jingle Bell Run 3k

Right through downtown Tallahassee. It was cool as it was part of a big tree lighting festival and everything. Pretty casual. No numbers or anything. Too many dadjum walkers though. There were probably a couple thousand people there so it was pretty big and kickin. Fairly cool since it was an evening run and definitely set a 3k PR for me. :-) 16:34

Turkey Trot 5k

Nice course in Johnson City. Pretty consistent mild rolling hills. No really long or steep hills so it was a pretty good consistent run. I think starting out a little slower helped me keep pace, and I even had enough to sprint by like 4 or 5 people in the last .1 miles. Still got a ways to go before I hit those 27s. ;-) We did almost get a PR though which was really surprising! (only 13 seconds off) 28:28 Mom - 28:31

FSU Cares 5k

Basically a 5k around campus, so mildly hilly, but nothing to extreme. Keith has been having shin splints so he took it easy and stayed back with me. Woke up with a little nausea so I wasn't expecting much. Keith kicked my ass and we kept about 9 minute mile pace for the first two miles, but at about the 4k mark I just hit a wall. My stomach felt bad and I got a side stitch. Managed to still do alright, but I also haven't been training near as much as I should have. I've been nursing my calf issue since it started acting up again and I was really stoked it didn't bother me at all today. All-in-all a pretty good run given the circumstances. 30:00

Christmas Connection 5k

My first 5k in Tally! Since mom isn't down here she ran one up in bristol so we could still be running together in spirit. :-) It was upper 40s low 50s so a little brisk at the start, but the course wasn't too bad. Pretty flat at first then continually more and more hilly until the last mile was pretty up and down. I was going to be really stoked if I could keep 10 minute mile pace so I was pretty stoked with my time. Kinda funny that mom and I still got about the same time even though we ran separately. 29:15 Mom - 29:05

Tour De Possum Creek & Crazy 8's

In the morning was the Tour De Possum Creek, a 22.5 mile bike ride. Started with slight rolling hills and the hills got increasingly more rolling as the course progressed. It was a casual race, hence no official time. My first group ride too! ~ 1:05:00 In the evening was the crazy 8's 8k. I missed it last year due to my sprained ankle and just did the 3k walk. Different course than the last time I ran it. Some rolling hills, but nothing too extreme. Both races had pretty high humidity and the 8k was still around 80 so it was pretty hot. I was completely soaked with sweat after no more than a mile, which made the rest of the race feel like I had a weighted shirt on. Considering my morning, I had a better time than I was expecting. 55:23 Mom - 55:22

Bristol Challenge

This wasn't just a run, but it was a race so I thought I would include it. The race consisted of an 18 mile bike ride, a 4.5 mile run, and a 1.5 mile kayak. Mom, Lauren, and I did it as a relay team with mom biking, lauren running, and me kayaking. It was a nice overcast day so it didn't get too hot, which was nice. We were probably the least trained and most ill-equipped, but we still had fun! Bike (Mom) - 1:13:00 Run (Lauren) - 38:00 Kayak (Me) - 26:00 Totatl Time - 2:17:00

Biltmore Classic 5k

That's right! Back-to-back 5k races! (Yes, we are a little crazy) On the Biltmore Estate, lightly hilly. Out and back route with the first half being mostly downhill and the second half being mostly uphill. Our second mile split was in the 18s so we were still keeping a good pace. Our final time wasn't great, but my pedometer registered 3.33 miles instead of 3.1 and it read exactly 3.1 at yesterdays race so we suspect that the course was mismeasured. Anyhoo, we still ran two 5ks this weekend and both set PRs (yesterday) and never walked! 31:05 Mom - 31:05

The Human Race 5k

Waynesville, NC. Slight rolling hills. None of the course was really flat, but there were no steep hills, which was nice. Started out around 60 degrees so it was pretty pleasant weather-wise. Planned on taking it easy, but didn't do a good job. ;-) 28:15 (PR) Mom- 28:15 (PR)

Country Music Half Marathon

Nashville, TN! Our first (and likely only) half marathon (that's 13.1 frickin' miles)! Woohoo! It was pretty good. I could definitely tell that I haven't been training that much recently. Those last few miles were pretty rough. We definitely ran faster than we were expecting, which might have contributed to the feeling rough at the end. Lots of bands and people! 2:36:39 Mom - 2:36:39 Lauren - 1:46:57

Race for Humanity 5k

Rainy day. We both didn't feel very strong at all while we were running. Most of our injuries didn't bother us. The half marathon next weekend is definitely going to be interesting! Same route through downtown Bristol as previous years. Didn't realize until I typed it in that I set a PR today! 29:17 (PR) Mom - 29:15

Take Back the Night 5k

Run around Johnson City starting and finishing at ETSU. First two miles were mostly downhill meaning the last mile was mostly uphill, which was a little rough. The last half mile was entirely uphill. It was 33 degrees so it was a little chilly. Our first 5k in the snow! Nothing major but it snowed pretty much the entire race. I still set a PR which was awesome. This training stuff is pretty snazzy!! 29:26(PR) Mom: 29:31

Our first 10k!! - Reedy River Run in Greenville, SC

One or our most beautiful runs. Weather was cool, but sunny. Started in downtown greenville and mostly ran through parks around the Reedy Rvier. Wouldn't have had to walk except for the large hill in the sixth mile. Still kept a better pace than we were expecting for our first 10k. Feel a little better about the upcoming half marathon now. 1:02:29 Mom's Time 1:02:46

Paris Mountain Road Race

Rolling hills course around Furman's Campus. 31:42 Mom's time 31.40

Eastman 3k

Mom - 17:50 Me - 17:51 Dad - 20:21 It's been a while since we did much running so it was a little rough but good race to start back with since it was only a 3k. It was also nice that dad could run it with us.

Race for Humanity 5k

Mom - 30:53 Me - 31:00 This was a pretty fast race. We were expecting to die since it was the first race of the season, but actually fared pretty well. All the times were pretty quick. It was actually sunny and fairly warm and was the same course as the previous two years.

Furman Family Weekend 5k

Run around campus starting at Cherrydale. It was a little brisk but ended up being just about perfect. Pretty unofficial race. Only a couple main awards. Everything was pretty lax. 31:01 Mom's time: probably somewhere around 30 flat

Rhythm and Roots 5k

Second year we have done this one. Cool "figure 8" through downtown bristol. Weather was cool and cloudy and perfect for a run. Same route as Race for Humanity just different starting and finishing places. Surprisingly good time since I hadn't run in a while and I've gained like 5 pounds in the past couple of weeks. First race ever with no side stitch! 30:34 Mom's time - 29:27

Eastman 3k

Sloping uphill, then mild downhill to the finish. Went out a little strong and race was delayed which made it a little warm 17:12 Mom's time: 16:47
